“Coming home from very lonely places, all of us go a little mad: whether from great personal success, or just an all-night drive, we are the sole survivors of a world no one else has ever seen.”
~ John le Carre
I remember the first time I read this quote I wondered why it only alludes to a pinnacle and valley floor. What about the abyss?
After all, it is a place we have all known—perhaps only briefly, but know it we have. Some of us have been in freefall in that hideous void many times over. Each time we find our way out we may emerge exhausted, but we are also stronger; more fit and able to move forward in life—more experienced and capable… unless we choose to ignore where we have been. If we can own it without bitterness and regret—if we can claim the gain and let the misery fall away we will grow and ultimately work our way to new ground—places of greater wonder, beauty and security.
In this life we will never be infallible, but we can be better. If we keep it personal and never measure our progress against that of another. To me this is the heart of the quote: “… we are the sole survivors of a world no one else has ever seen.”

Ooh, that last sentence really got my attention.
How true, there are places of which we are sole survivors. And equally true, we can emerge stronger if we don't come out of our personal abysses with bitterness.
Thank you, this post resonated with me.
Beauty--Me too. I know how hard it is to fight being bitter-- it is a battle I've fought often.
Beautiful thoughts and very profound. I guess that is where I am at right now. Amazing how I am finding others thoughts and writings as though they are meant for me alone. Puts a spin on my life right now. A good spin. :)
Tricia...you hit the nail on the head here. I agree ♥ and really felt what you said about not measuring ourselves up to another.
Beautiful you.
Nice, nice, quote. Thank you for that. I can't imagine any abuse survivor reading that last line and not taking a moment of pause to digest it.
Thank you. I'd never heard the quote before.

Tricia this got the better of me! this was great. I am using the picture for my desktop. Such peace yet surreal! thank you.
Linda--I know you are facing a huge event in your life. As I said before I wish you the very best. (It is amazing how connected most of us are isn't it?)
S Heather--You always have something positive to say. Thank you so much.
Faith--It is one of my favorite quotes although the writer is not one I read. Funny huh?
JBR--Glad you got something good from it. I took the pic back at the beginning of summer at Lassen National Park. (An active volcano)
In this life, we are never really alone - that is the illusion.
peace and love
Thank you for these last posts.
Aloha, Friend!

Shen--You seem to be in a much better place lately-- I'm so happy for you. I think you would agree though that being lonely and being alone are not one and the same.
Cloudia-- My pleasure. Aloha to you friend.
"If we keep it personal and never measure our progress against that of another."
Therein lies my challenge.
Drifter--We all have something to bring to the table. Each of us is so very different there is really no reliable way to measure ourselves against another. I hope you will overcome your challenge.
"If we can own it without bitterness and regret—if we can claim the gain and let the misery fall away we will grow and ultimately work our way to new ground—places of greater wonder, beauty and security."
I'm putting that in a place where I can read it every day. That is very profound. You just keep getting better every post!
Shirl--Thank you. You always have been encouraging-- I appreciate it.

Hi Tricia, Sometimes there is nothing to add to your blog, even trying to find the right comment is hard, as your pictures and words say it all. This is one of these times.
Stick in there your doing great.
Darrel--You are quite welcome--happy to help. :)
Dan--Thanks so much. I'm not sure I'd give much weight to advice from the likes of me though.
Donald--Thanks. Your comment is a nice start for my day.
hi there, this quote and your reflection on it are where I am right now! deep in thought by myself surrounded by others I must get out of the abyss!
Beautiful words!

"survival is a talent"
As always, thanks for sharing.
Wishing you a blessed Sunday!!!
Yes, the abyss. I've known that place. The knowledge that I gained, about my own strength, is immeasurable.
I am so very thankful to be on this side, of that.
Please visit my blog and pick up the award I have for you!
They are strong words of reality Tricia. For we are the loyal gate keepers of our hearts. And if we don't take a strong stance from negative memories, bitterness will seep through.
Barbara--Thanks for the very wise words. It's nice to see you here.
